Meet Nancy
Pellon: Where do you find inspiration for your work?
Nancy: Because I find inspiration practically everywhere, I usually carry a little sketchbook with me. The sight and sounds of my children smiling, laughing, and playing…the wonderful people I look up to, as well as the plethora of artists I have never met all inspire me. A huge amount of inspiration also comes from my surroundings here in VT. I like to study and observe nature…It could be as simple as the minute details on a piece of weathered wood at our camp. A recent funny inspiration is a huge frog my daughters found at our camp, and affectionately look for every time we return.
P: What does your creative process entail?
N: It usually will start with quick sketches when inspiration hits …before I forget! Everything could become anything, so no matter how small I like to jot it down, so that I can draw inspiration from it again in the future. Sketching then leads to translating it in a digital format on my computer. Once there, it can be used for a multitude of purposes…I believe the most important part of the process is seeing through each idea as far as I can take it at that moment.
P: Why do you enjoy sewing/crafting/quilting?
N: It is an extremely relaxing and gratifying experience every time I get to create. I love seeing and sharing projects, especially with the immensely talented online sewing community. I also love sharing my knowledge with my children so that they will have this creative outlet in their lives too!
P: Do you create mainly for satisfaction, gifts, art or another reason?
N: I used to only create art (I consider everything art) for myself, then slowly as gifts for others. This led to a broader audience wanting my creations, and/or to learn my processes. So, I soon discovered the joy in creating on a larger scale for other like-minded creatives. I love learning and sharing what I have learned any way that I can.
P: What tips or tricks learned through experience can you share?
N: Never give up on your dreams…especially when you can’t even go a day without thinking (or dreaming) about them. For me, it is sewing, art & designing, creating sewing and textile patterns and inspiring others to follow their dreams as well. I like to keep a quote on my wall that I say all the time… “Dreaming Does Matter; It Allows Us To Become That Which We Aspire To Be.”
P: When and why did you start sewing/quilting/crafting?
N: I discovered sewing, etc. while in high school, and have never looked back! For me, it is relaxing, and I have never had a hobby that has made me this happy apart from my art (which I have been doing since 3rd grade). I have now been sewing for over 25 years, and don’t plan on ever stopping. I am constantly learning new techniques, and it is such a rewarding and useful skill to have!
P: What inspires you to start a project?
N: It really depends on the day! I am starting projects anytime I see new fabric, a new pattern design, a beautiful quilt or bag that someone shared online! I love the online sewing groups that I belong to as the comradery and support given to each other is amazing! Social media has definitely provided me with another creative outlet as well as a being a huge source of inspiration.
