Meet Amy
Pellon: Where do you find inspiration for your work?
Amy: I am inspired by words and pictures all over the internet and in magazines. Even when I don’t have time for sewing, I’m on the lookout for styles and colors that appeal to me. I love reading blogs and finding great ideas on Flickr and Pinterest.
P: What does your creative process entail?
A: I usually think about the project I want to make for a while, coming up with possible colors and fabrics I want to use. {I have a big stash!} If I can, I like to cut out my entire project before I start to sew. It feels like I’m working from a kit and the project goes together quickly from there.
P: Why do you enjoy sewing/crafting/quilting?
A: I just love it when I show someone my work, and they show it to someone else, saying, “Amy made that!” It makes me smile every time.
P: Do you create mainly for satisfaction, gifts, art or another reason?
A: I’m one of those people who just can’t NOT sew! I guess that means it’s for my own satisfaction.
P: What tips or tricks learned through experience can you share?
A: Having everything I need on-hand is very important to me. When I have the time for sewing, I don’t want to waste it shopping for the basics. I stock up on fabrics, zippers, and interfacings, as well as needles and thread.
P: When and why did you start sewing/quilting/crafting?
A: My grandma was a great sewist and must have been delighted to find out that I loved home ec class in junior high. She made sure I had a good sewing machine and knew how it worked. I can still hear her words of encouragement as I sew today. She taught me the value of a seam ripper, too, saying, “You are only as good a sewer as you are an un-sewer!” True, right?
P: What inspires you to start a project?
A: My new projects are most often inspired by the fabrics in my collection. When I buy them, I imagine how they could be used. I like to join sew alongs, to stay motivated to try something new.
